POSITION DESCRIPTION
Position Title: Marketing & Communications Intern
Department: Marketing & Communications
Report To: Assistant Director, Marketing & Communications
POSITION SUMMARY STATEMENT: To build relationships both internally among staff and externally among donors, volunteers and general audiences to increase the visibility of United Way of Central Maryland. Intern will work cooperatively with the Marketing & Communications staff to support fundraising efforts during campaign season and raise awareness about the “need” in our community and UWCM’s role in improving lives across the region.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (include but not limited to):
Weight (%) duties and responsibilities in priority order to total 100%:
30% E-marketing
Support UWCM’s online marketing efforts. Utilize Constant Contact to develop email invitations and other email communications, working closely with Major Gifts Department. Update and edit website content on www.uwcm.org and www.emergingleadersunited.org.
25% General Marketing Support
Intern will function as a member of the Marketing & Communications team, working closely with Director of Marketing, Assistant Director of Marketing, Web Development Specialist and Graphic Designer. Assistance with projects such as event promotion, campaign promotion and other tasks will be requested.
20% Media Relations Support
Review newspapers and other publications for mentions of United Way of Central Maryland, member agencies, issue areas and look for opportunities for UWCM to be ‘part of the conversation.’ Archive press clippings. Draft press releases and build media lists based upon target audiences.
15% Copywriting, story telling and editing
Assist in the writing and production of UWCM materials. Write compelling stories that bring to life UWCM work for use on website, in email, in collateral materials and newsletters. Interview donors and volunteers as needed. Assist in proofreading UWCM publications to ensure they meet organizational style and branding standards.
10% Constituent Relations
Provide support following UWCM direct mail outreach efforts to contact recipients and assess their satisfaction with UWCM and UWCM’s communications. Also contact donors who request and receive incentives to thank them and assess their satisfaction. Gather feedback and present to Assistant Director Marketing & Communications, and coordinate additional conversations when necessary. Manage follow-up process after donors return donor brochure postcard.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS (required education, years of experience, skills and abilities): Individual with or seeking a bachelor’s degree. Academic concentration in Marketing, Communications, Journalism, Business or English.
Candidate must possess self-confidence, integrity, active listening skills and organizational skills, and be energetic, friendly, articulate, focused, detail-oriented and creative. Candidate must have the ability to see a project through to completion.
Skills include:
• Excellent written and oral communication skills, including public speaking
• Proofreading ability, particularly AP Style
• Ability to manage multiple tasks in an independent, fast-paced environment
• Social networking mechanisms
PHYSICAL DEMANDS (sitting, standing, lifting, etc.):
The intern is primarily seated while performing the duties of the position. There is also a fair amount of standing and walking. The hands are used to write, type, draw or handle small objects and controls. This position requires talking to individuals and groups, ability to hear others speak, visual acuity to design and implement layouts for events. Weights of up to 30 pounds occasionally lifted.
